Is design important?

To answer this question, it is also worth asking another, prerequisite question: what is design?

For a lay person design is most likely beautiful things they see around them: books, cars, buildings, drawings…

But isn’t a book made by a writer? A car by an engineer? Building by an architect, and a drawing by an artist?

So, what is the design exactly?

Is everyone a designer, then?

I would wager to say yes, actually. Every person has to plan things, layout a course of action and make choices.

When you go for a picnic on a Sunday afternoon with friends, you had to make a dozen of choices: about the food, about the place, about the people you want to go with. You had to design your experience of having a picnic.

In fact, we can deconstruct almost any activity into numerous small steps and find out that it is us who are responsible for the majority of the choices most of the time.

Therefore yes, design is not only important, it is essential for existence. If you don’t design your own life and experiences, somebody will have to do it and it might not turn out the way you like.
