AI will never help you, really

For the past several days I have been debugging an important part of infrastructure in project. You know, the type of bugs which appear randomly, not documented thoroughly and are hard to catch because they appear occasionally in production.

Every time I analysed it with Claude it confidently came up with random stuff to throw at the wall. Only half the time it made sense.

Part of the issue was a “communication” problem — I might have not provided enough context to it. The other half it skipped over some important obscure part which is just too tiny to notice, even if it had been written down into CLAUDE.md twice.

So in the end it was me doing good old engineering with a rubber ducky. If anything Claude makes a great rubber duck out of itself, albeit maybe a more expensive one.
